AIM to Get Better Through Healing Sound Therapy – Coming Soon!
The calming and healing effects of music have been recognised for millennia, and in the UK, health services have employed music therapists for decades. There is a wealth of evidence showing that certain types of music therapy can reduce distressing symptoms of depression, anxiety, trauma, dementia, and sleep disorders. It can also impact some physical symptoms.
How Does It Work?
Stress, anxiety, panic, agitation, restlessness, anger, and aggression are all symptoms of our sympathetic nervous system – our “fight or flight” response being triggered. This response is not under our conscious control; it is an innate survival strategy to a perceived threat. Modern imaging techniques have shown that when this response is triggered, the conscious, rational part of our brain shuts down, or goes into “snooze state”, and our language centre switches off. At the same time, our emotional brain goes into overdrive, making our behaviour and emotional outbursts appear irrational to those standing by.
Effective Interventions
You cannot help a person in this state by rationalising or communicating through language. The most effective way to help is to trigger the parasympathetic nervous system, which switches off the “fight, flight, freeze” response, sending messages to the body and brain that the danger has passed and they can “stand down” from the perceived threat. This can be achieved through breathing control, sensory interventions (such as hand massages, stroking their hair, using weighted blankets or pet therapy), or through music and sound therapy.
Healing Sound Therapies
Benefits for Everyone
Healing sound therapy benefits not only those in a heightened state of distress (due to dementia, depression, anxiety, trauma-related conditions) but is for everyone. Combined with relaxation and meditation techniques, it boosts the parasympathetic nervous system, helping to reduce blood pressure, decrease inflammatory chemicals, boost the immune system, and increase “feel-good” chemicals in the brain.
We are excited to offer healing sound therapy (music and sound baths) for everyone to benefit from and are currently working on recording tracks specifically designed to help people in distress return to wellbeing.
